We figured we were probably only going to go to the centre of Australia once, so we were pretty keen to get things done and so we made a day trip out to walk around King's Canyon, the star attraction in the Watarrka National Park, 3-4h away on the road from Yulara where we were staying for Uluru and Kata Tjuta.
After Sydney we flew inland towards Uluru, the monolith in the middle of Australia. I learned a few surprising things reading up on “Ayer's Rock” before we went, turns out it's not alone.
Iceland was the last bit of Europe before I headed back home via Australia. The plan fell apart as soon as I stopped overnight in London before my flight the next morning… which bloody BA cancelled. I always make a point out of avoiding British Airways like the plague, but I figured one flight out of London City can't be too hard for them to manage. Nope… in fact they still don't actually seem to know why they cancelled the flight, so I'm guessing some idiot just pressed the wrong button.
After our day at the Jökulsárlón lagoon we drove back to Vik to stay our last night in Iceland. But it was only 4pm and the light doesn't disappear completely until after midnight, so I decided to go for a bit of a walk…
After Reykjavik and our roundtrip around the inland area near it, my friend and I picked up a hire car and headed east, tracking counter-clockwise along the island's ring-road towards Vik and the Jökulsárlón icebergs.
